Variety Origin: ‘Smith Family Yellow’ is an Itoh hybrid peony variety, bred by American breeder Donald R. Smith. It was successfully cultivated in Massachusetts, USA in 2002 and officially registered with the American Peony Society.
Core Characteristics: The flower color is a pure, deep yellow. Inconspicuous small red marks are present at the petal bases. The center is filled with dense golden-yellow stamens, complemented by 4 light green carpels and yellow stigmas, creating a harmonious overall color. A single stem typically produces 2-3 flower buds, and lateral buds open uniformly, extending the overall bloom period to 2.5 weeks. Although the variety has stamens and pollen, it does not produce seeds.
Cultivation Performance: Excellent cold and heat tolerance, with an extremely wide adaptation range. Suited for planting in full sun or partial shade environments; ample sunlight intensifies flower color. Not particular about soil pH; can grow in acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils. Prefers sandy soil. The core requirement is well-drained soil.
‘Smith Family Yellow’ is a highly representative yellow Itoh peony variety, perfectly merging the showy flower form of the tree peony parent with the robust growth characteristics of the herbaceous peony parent. It offers advantages including pure color, full flower form, long bloom period, wide adaptation range, strong disease resistance, and easy care.
