Description

Variety Origin: Registered in 1971 by American breeders H.E. Sass and Reynolds. It is a horticultural variety of Paeonia lactiflora (Chinese peony). Named for its unique chocolate-brown luster, it is a rare dark-colored classic in the peony family.

Core Characteristics: Plant habit is upright and robust, with resilient stems. Deep magenta, cup-shaped flowers possess a chocolate-brown luster, with a distinctive form, contrasting vividly against the dark green compound leaves. Blooms in mid-to-late season, with multiple buds per stem, offering a relatively long ornamental period.

Cultivation Performance: Excellent cold and heat tolerance. Can overwinter outdoors in many regions across northern and southern China. Prefers full sun. Not demanding regarding soil type, but avoid waterlogging. Planting requires attention to bud depth. Easy to propagate by division in autumn. Low maintenance, with a lifespan of up to a century.

Hot Chocolate is a distinctive dark-colored peony, standing out with its rare chocolate-brown flowers. It combines robust adaptability with high ornamental value. It can serve as a visual focal point in garden plantings and is suitable for modern floral design as a cut flower. It is an excellent choice for peony collectors and landscape designers.
